Ray Chapman
Ray Chapman is a highly respected Specialist Paramedic with more than 25 years of frontline experience serving Hull and the wider Yorkshire region. Throughout his long and demanding career, he has become known for his calmness under pressure, professionalism, and commitment to helping others in moments of crisis.

During his service he was posted to Northern Ireland, serving at Bessbrook Mill during mortar attacks, and was also involved in the aftermath of the Lockerbie air disaster. Those early experiences helped shape the resilience and composure that would later define his work on the frontline.

In April 2022, he saved the life of a veteran during a Remembrance Day parade, an act that earned him the Commanding Officer’s Gold Coin from 150 Regiment RLC. He was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Civic Award in November 2021 for his service and charitable work, and in November 2022 received the Ambulance Service Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for twenty years of dedicated frontline service.

Alongside his emergency work, Ray has mentored paramedics, supported community initiatives, and shared his experiences in his memoir, Becoming a Specialist Paramedic: From Fountain Road to Frontline.

Becoming a Specialist Paramedic
There's a moment in every paramedic's life when chaos meets calm - and you realise this isn't just a job. It's not the sirens or the adrenaline, but the privilege of being trusted at someone's worst moment.
That realisation didn't come in a classroom, but on wet tarmac, in cramped living rooms, and in the back of an ambulance humming with tension.
This book isn't just about clinical skill - it's about people, lessons,
and the moments that never leave you.
Becoming a Specialist Paramedic is not a story of medals or heroics, but of perseverance, reflection, and the resilience to rise again.
From early days on double-crewed ambulances to finding confidence through crisis - this is a journey of growth, courage, and becoming not just the title, but the person behind it.
